Serenity review

Back in September, I posted about Serenity. Well, I finally managed to watch it during the weekend, and this is my favorite movie of the year. It is more than I could ever imagine it would be. If you know Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel, Firefly) than you know his style. An unbelievable mix of humor, drama, shocks, horror. Some of the most quotable lines ever are in this movie. The action scenes are very cool, but most importantly the characters feel real, you care about them at every turn of events; you cheer for them and get nervous about their fate. These characters started in a TV series called Firefly, which was cancelled after half a season. But the creator did not give up, and wanted to continue the story. So now we get the movie. This is tighter than the TV series, the plot takes center stage, and the characters directly related to it are deeply affected by it, and radically changed at the end of the movie. Unfortunately, the secondary characters have less screen time than they would in a TV series. Hopefully they will have more opportunities to shine in a possible sequel. Even if you haven't watched the TV series, you can still enjoy this story. At the beginning of the movie, you are introduced to this new universe with intersting, never boring exposition. Once the introduction is done you get sucked into the first action scene, which plants the seeds for the final revelation. The funniest lines I've ever heard are delivered throughout the whole movie, and I still can't help laughing thinking of them. The final revelation is big, global. I never would have guessed it, even though clues were seen in the TV series. Not only the characters and their relationships are changed, but the whole universe is changed. I hope we'll get to see exactly how, in the sequel. If you have not watched this movie, I highly recommend it to you. Go watch it, one or more times. It's that good. Movie Score: 9/10
