Sin City

Sin City is a translation of the graphic novels by Frank Miller. I have read those graphic novels, and they are some of my favorite comics. Robert Rodrigez (Desperado, Spy Kids) managed to create a live action movie so close to the original material that they are almost the same thing. He achieved the look using completely digital background; many of the shots are taken from the comic panels; the dialogs are taken word by word from the comics, but most importantly he shared the director chair with Frank Miller himself. It can't get better than this. The Sin City movie contains 3 long stories, and 2 short ones. Let's start from the beginning: - The short story that opens the film, was filmed as a test shoot to convince Miller to green light the project. It's a very short scene, but it implies so much back story. - The Hard Goodbye: the best story, both in this movie and in the graphic novels. Micky Rourke is so perfect as Marv, his movements and expressions, and the voice. All male leads have very deep and low voices. - The Big Fat Kill: my least favorite Sin City graphic novel, the movie version was slightly more satisfying, thanks to the performances by Clive Owen, Benicio del Toro, Rosario Dawson, and a scene directed by Quentin Tarantino. - That Yellow Bastard: my second favorite GN, I love the ending of this story. In the comic you see the words "THE END", but wait... (watch the movie or read the GN). Bruce Willes does a good job, although he should have been older. I did not enjoy Jessica Alba's performance as much. She felt a little out of place in that world. - The closing short story is a pay off from the Big Fat Kill, and reintroduces a character from the first short story. A nice coda for a great movie. The violence is extreme, but the look of this movie is so particular, so distant from the real world, that I wasn't affected by the violence. I am a big fan of the Sin City GN, and I couldn't be happier of the movie version. Movie Score: 8/10
