Alien Resurrection and AVP

I will write briefly about Alien Resurrection and Alien VS Predator, since they are not good enough to deserve a full review. Alien Resurrection was a mistake. Jean-Pierre Jeunet has a very stong visual sensibility, but his vision does not fit this franchise. In the DVD he wonders why Fox wanted to hire him, and I think he only accepted the job for the experience and the money. I love some of his other films (City of lost children, Amelie) but he just wasn't a good choice. The script was dictated in parts by the studio, so Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy, Angel, Firefly) could not write the story he really wanted. His snappy dialog is still there, but I found it a little over the top for an Alien movie. By far the worst of the series. Movie score: 4/10 Alien VS Predator is a good enough action film, and if you're a fan of both franchises there are some satisfying geeky moments. It also stars Raoul Bova, who is basically the Italian Tom Cruise. He did a nice enough job. The story is very simple, not much depth, and not enough characterization. So when they inevitably die we don't care that much. The presence of Lance Henriksen (Bishop) is a nice link to the Alien saga. The fight scenes between Aliens and Predators are fine, though they cut down the gore to achieve a PG13 rating, which is silly since both the original series were R rated movies. If you loved the original series, you will enjoy this movie, otherwise this is just a monster/action movie. Movie score: 5/10
